My company is giving us all the afternoon off so that’s something I guess.

That’s cool. My company is doing *checks notes* jack shit. To be fair though, I only learned about Juneteenth within the last few years.

Yeah I’ve only learned about it from my time here in the the Gawker-verse interestingly enough. It’s weird to me that we’d have a half day but I’m glad to have it and more so the legitimization of this day.

I just looked it up s few days ago, and had the following depressing conversation with myself:
Me: how the fuck is this not a holiday?
*Thinks about it
Me: oh, yeah (sad trombone)

I only learned about it when I was in Texas. My company didn’t do anything special though.

Serious question, why is it called Junetenth and not the actual date?

I grew up in the inner city in an African American neighborhood. I knew Juneteenth was a festival, but didn’t know it was about the end of slavery til I was about 13.
I then went to a Catholic highschool out in the suburbs where there wasnt a single minority in the whole school and remember mentioning Juneteenth a couple of times only to be met with confused stares. But many of the people I went to school with there were terrified of the ‘inner city’ and exhibited the type of overt racism that many people will express when they think they are surrounded by ‘their own kind’.
But anyways, I always liked going to Juneteenth because they’re was always good food at the festival and am thankful of the rather unique upbringing I had to be able to experience such things.

I just learned that right now, from you. I’ll be 39 Monday . First I heard of it was two days ago, when I got an email from my bank saying they were closing early today for it. I made a mental note to look up what the deuce Juneteenth was. As typical for my mental notes, I promptly forgot about it.
That was a gap in my knowledge big enough to drive a truck through.
